BONUS DAY #261

A Saturday hanging out with grandchildren is always a great day!  Even a little Christmas shopping with them topped off the morning.  This group of grandchildren are getting old enough to beat grandpa at various games in the game room.  (It occurs to me that they might even think grandpa is getting a little on the “old side” to beat them).  Ha!  It is delightful to watch the kids grow and develop.  Next week we are off to Texas to babysit for a few days with the Texas grandchildren.  (Hopefully I can put up a better “game” against the younger ones).  Every single minute is precious with family.  Never take it for granted.

BONUS DAY #260

“I believe the hydraulic floor jacks are exempt from the 25% off coupon,” the check out guy at Harbor Freight Tools said after waiting behind 8 people and 12 waiting behind me.  I had printed up the coupon after receiving it from my brother John in an email.  (I had mentioned to him about wanting floor jack and he found the coupon).  The coupon was small any way, and the font on the print even smaller.  I believe I experienced EXACTLY what is referred to as “the fine print.”  Ha!  My initial reaction was to leave the stuff in the cart and just walk out.  No kidding…..I haven’t felt that reactionary since before talking heart medication.  Instead I just kept letting him check out my cart of stuff.  (I guess you would say–I needed the hydraulic jack to get the front wheels off my lawn tractor).  So I sucked it up and paid the Harbor Freight guy what he said I owed him.  Sometimes the “fine print” isn’t worth the drama!

BONUS DAY #259

Thanks to some electrician friends my new house is completely set up in case of a power outage.  The need was greater here because of being on a well and septic, if the power goes out, you only have the water in the tank available to use.  I have usually always had a power generator available.  (For those of us who have lived through extended power outages you usually don’t want to be caught with out a source of power the “second time”).  There is never a power outage system that doesn’t need some attention once in a while unless you are set up completely automated.  So today I went out and fired up the generator. Fortunately my new generator is electric start, so I am not pulling and pulling on a cord.  When the generator fired up, I had a moment where I was thinking about the “what-if” it was a real power outage.  How long would I wait until I went out to the garage to pull the cord to the house and go through all the steps of turning off the house breaker/on the generator breaker and fire the thing up?  An hour with the power off?  Three hours with the power off?  As I was thinking about it, I became consumed in the idea of what is the true “fall back” in our lives.  What is the “default plan?”  There are so many possible contingencies, the only really true fall back is God!  We live our lives never in as much in control as we ever think.  We need to be reminded constantly, that we could never “cover enough” contingencies.  Our lives are in God’s hands.

BONUS DAY #258

There is nothing like a “Bonus Day Blog” to make a person completely vulnerable but here goes:  It isn’t a big deal to most people, but to me, I just can’t find the stud in a wall to save my life.  There.  I. Said. It.  I will go blocks around a project to avoid trying to find a stud–stud finders don’t work, tapping doesn’t work, AND I know….I know…16 or 24 inch centers, (doesn’t work for me)–finding a junction box, (NO).  You get it.  I think there was a stud there, but it hides when I come looking for it! Ha!  Every time I try to find a stud, I usually end up with a bunch of holes in the wall–this ugly mess.  So I intentionally avoided the mess by buying a TV that could sit on the 9 and half inch ledge over the fireplace.  The largest TV with that fit the criteria was a 43 inch one.  A 43 inch TV works out great in most bedrooms, but in a family room/living room/kitchen/dining room (large space flow) it was a pretty small and washed out picture.  I let it go on for 6 weeks, convincing myself it was what was best.  Then for 2 weeks I would go into the various stores to look at TV’s and walk out convincing myself I was satisfied with what I had.  Finally, I said to God:  “I know there are 180 million families with no access to clean drinking water, and my only stress about getting a TV that will fit in the room is finding a stud without having to ‘drill to china’ but I could use your help here with a little confidence.”  So I bought the TV, the mounting device, and other cords then headed home.  Just before I started I said to God–“If you help me do this I won’t be cocky or take any credit.”  The minute I prayed that prayer, a peace came over me.  I find the two studs necessary and brackets were up in 30 minutes.  It took longer figuring out the remote control than it did putting the TV up!  It is powerful what happens when we get our own selves (and our own pride) out of the way……

BONUS DAY #257

Monday Night Game Night is officially reinstated at the TCRG International Headquarters!  The Black Friday deal with the Ping Pong Table was what brought game night back around.  There are 7 official game categories at the game night and the two competitors (Grandma and Grandpa) compete against each other until others of you join in at 7 PM Eastern Time (immediately following the national news).  Better yet, start your own family game night whenever you can and where ever you are…..

BONUS DAY #256

It was so good to be able to have lunch, fellowship and catch up with some long, long time friends.  People who have known me almost all of my ministry and adult life.  I was reflecting on how unconditional their love and support has been for me (us) over the years.  It might have to do with living bonus days, but it gives me a little snap shot of what Heaven is going to be like–in fellowship; in sharing; in hope; and in joy.  I so appreciate friends!

BONUS DAY #255

The last couple of months God has been talking to me about pride.  Pride in my own life through the years.  It hasn’t been pleasant at all.  Yet, as always, God has been gentle with me.  As I have studied pride in Scripture, and am preaching about it this Sunday, I realize that it is more than just me God is talking to about pride.  Pride is essentially the Devil greatest weapon used against us.  Pride is what brought him down and what he uses to bring us down.  Stay tuned….there is going to be much, much more about pride, as God gives me the bonus days to study, pray and share.

BONUS DAY #254

We had to call in a plumber today.  Unexpectedly, but urgent–fortunately we found a new one in our new area we live and he was able to come over and take care of a couple of issues in our new house.  He said something very interesting.  He was a believer in Christ and made that known pretty soon after arriving.  He said, “I’m always open to what God has for me each day.  I always ask Him to send me places I can talk about and share about the Lord.”  Pretty cool.  It sure made the bill he presented feel like it was God’s direction.

Every day is a Bonus Day.

BONUS DAY #253

What to do when you know you should attend something you really don’t think is necessary, but seems like you need to make an appearance?  I guess you get ready and go–which we did.  Interestingly, where ever we find ourselves we should make the best and look for the God opportunities.  It occurred to me during this whole situation that they only time there are not God opportunities is when you allow your attitude to degenerate to the place of disrespect, sarcasm, criticism, or mockery.  Where ever you go, and whatever you do where you go–the key for God working is to keep your attitude God focused.

BONUS DAY #252

It was great to make an annual visit to the Church of the Heartland’s Bible College now called “Growth Track.”  My subject is usually Leadership and Pastor Heath Hiatt let’s me take it any form I want to go.  I was going along on the concept of really tuning into God and suddenly God directed me toward people who were thinking about ending their own life.  Quite a departure from the subject at hand, I don’t know why I was directed that way, but I went with it and talked about how God cares and people care.  The class is/was put in video form and put up on YouTube, so one never knows who might eventually tune in.  Bonus days teach me not to take anything for granted–and simply follow the nudge of the Holy Spirit.
